The Key English Language Test - Case Studies
Case Study 1: Institute of Business and Technology
An international business and technology institute in Sydney receives over 300 new international enrolments every semester. Business and technology course teachers do not want to be burdened with students whose English might be below the required level. All of the international students have IELTS test scores, but their actual English skills as they stand now need to be confirmed before being allocated to a course. If any student's English is insufficient, he/she will be provided with further English tuition and support.
Because of the time and manpower resources that needed to be diverted to the English-skills screening of each student at intake time, it was decided to look for a more efficient method.
English Outlook's Key Test was chosen for the task.
The Key Test couples a high level assessment of the student's grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension skills with a timely reporting mechanism. Fast and easily administered online - and with no need for teacher supervision - full test scores are immediately emailed and written to the institute's database. Students Key Test scores are then compared to a predetermined test cut-off point and on that basis either enrolled in their chosen business course, or offered English tuition and ongoing English language support
Case Study 2: Immigration to Australia
A Migration agency wants to provide a cheap and easy mechanism whereby its potential immigrant clients, living in Asian countries, can test their approximate readiness for sitting an IELTS test. The waiting time for the test can be many months and the cost involved high: more than 2 weeks salary in many cases. This cost in time and money to find out that they were nowhere near ready to get the score they required and to learn they have to spend more time and more money to get ready to do the test again is highly prohibitive for many in developing nations.
Cut-off points in English Outlook's Key Test allow migration candidates to gauge their approximate level of readiness to achieve IELTS Scores of 5 through to 7.
Because the test is available online, candidate's don't need to go to specific service centres to take the English Outlook Key Test. They can login at home and access the test from anywhere in the world.
Case Study 3: New Industry Plant in Rockhampton
A business recruitment agency was required to assess the English level of its candidates for a large industry plant being built in Rockhampton. As the English level required wasn't very high, it was important that candidates were familiar with specific vocabulary used in that industry, but the engagement of an English teacher for the screening of so many job applicants was deemed to be too prohibitive.
What was needed was was a system whereby applicants could have their English skills and specific vocab quickly and efficiently assessed online, from anywhere in the world, without the need for attending specific service centres and without the need for manual intervention of qualified English teachers.
The Key English Test was able to be customised to provide an assessment of English at a lower level of expertise, as well as to be modified to incorporate job-specific English vocabulary and terminology.
